It is located at liberty road ring road in Ibadan Oyo State. The Stadium was created in 1960 which happens to be when Nigeria became independent. As a memorial of that event, the regional prime minister then Chief Obafemi Awolowo named it Liberty Stadium but, it was renamed after the Prime minister as the Obafemi Awolowo's stadium by the then President Goodluck E Jonathan. He was inspired after paying a visit to the widow (the wife of the late Awolowo) Chief Hannah Awolowo in 2010.
