University of Ibadan Zoo Garden

University of Ibadan zoo garden is also called university of Ibadan zoology garden. Establish in 1948 for research. But primarily as a menagerie (where wild animals are kept in captivity for exhibition). It is of cause located in University of Ibadan. If you fly down to Ibadan from Abuja, as our custom is, to direct hangout folks from Abuja where to chill in Nigeria. Luckily, tomorrow the 11th of November is a public holiday in Nigeria called Mawlid. It’s an Islamic holiday to celebrate the the birthday of prophet Muhammad the last prophet of Allah (God) according to them. So 9th and 11th of November is given as a public holiday.

Today actually being 9th and we know majority of workers in Nigeria don’t go to work during the weekend. So one could plan the trip to visit the Zoo garden this holiday. Well I was there today. Going from the Capital city of Nigeria (FCT) to Ibadan would take approximately an hour five minutes. One could check online for a cheap airline but try and go with your guts to choose the one you think is safe and affordable then take a cab to the University of Ibadan. If one stays in Ibadan already, one could save cost by taking a taxi to the next bus stop which doesn’t exceed a hundred Naira.  Just take a taxi to Songo (i.e if you’re not coming toward University of Ibadan). Then another taxi from songo to University of Ibadan (general know there as UI). Well since I just went there, I can say present that the cab fare is fifty Naira. When you get to UI, you would also go with a taxi to the zoo which cost N30. To enter the zoo as an adult, you pay the sum of N500 with your wards no matter how old they are. But kids with their school uniform could be considered to pay N300.

When one finally gets to the zoo, one would see this statue. It shows it has lions in the zoo. You’ll see the warning spelt out boldly that visitors are not allowed to feed the animals and staff have the right to escort anyone not abiding to the rules guiding the wild animals they are even authorized to call the police for does trying to resist them.

A common cliche’ says let the sleeping dog lie, let me put it in my own words to say let the sleeping lion lie. Someone in 1991 was eaten up by a lion in that same zoo. He wanted to reciprocate what happen in the Holy Bible about Daniel and the lions den. Daniel according to the Bible was persecuted for not worshipping the gods of the Persian so he was thrown into the lions den and was not devoured. His testimony was that God sent an angel to shut the mouth of the lion. Guess this man who was also called Daniel, Prophet Daniel Abodunrin thought it would happen to him so he did an exhibition and was allowed in with the Lions. Strangely, the Lions didn’t attack him at first. He would have imagined what firm he would attract if he had gotten out on touched then came the lion pouncing on him feasting on him as a well deserved meal. A terrible way to learn the lessons from the  Bible that one don’t tempt the Lord your God.

They also have crocodiles and alligators. The difference between crocodiles and alligators is in the snouts. The crocodiles have snouts that is shaped as “V” while alligators are “U” shaped. The adult crocodiles are separated from the young ones. We were told the adults prey on the younger ones. They are feed with fresh flesh or a life chicken.
